IMPACT OF EHR IMPLEMENTATION IN NURSING HOMES ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

Abstract Nursing homes (NHs) are a critical part of the US healthcare system providing care to sick and fragile elderly, research suggests that they can benefit from implementation health information technology (HIT). However, for multiple reasons—exclusion HITECH incentives; limited financial wherewithal; hazy return on investments (ROI), have lagged in HIT compared other significant components system. Utilizing resource-based view (RBV) firm, purpose this study was examine longitudinal impact NH performance potentially building sustainable economic argument its implementation. To relationship, we merged data five different sources between years 2009-2013-: Health Information Management Systems Society, LTCFocus, Online Survey Certification Reporting/Certification Provider Enhanced Reporting, Area Resource Files, Medicare Cost Reports. The outcome variable which measured four ways: operating cost revenue, margin, total margin. independent interest using novel Adoption Score (HAS) reflecting applications. Four separate multivariate linear regression models were estimated, included series organizational market characteristics analyses. We report positive association improved profitability (operating margin) (p≤0.01), lower (p≤0.05). Our results, suggesting potential business case EHR within NHs, important policy managerial implications discussed.
